BAHRA and Mile High SHRM are joining forces for this afternoon event that tackles one of HR's most challenging topics in today's job climate: how to Catch and Keep Top Talent.  The afternoon will include two speaker sessions and one panel session. There will be a networking social after the last session.   Snacks will be served in the afternoon and drinks and appetizers will be served during the social.

Session 1:  Retool Your Recruiting Process
It’s no secret that finding the right employees in this competitive market can be frustrating. While many people claim that low unemployment is to blame, that’s only part of the picture. The fact is you want the best candidates, not just the unemployed. In a market that favors the job seeker, old screening tactics and drawn-out recruitment processes frequently frustrate candidates, giving a negative impression of your company – or worse, the abandonment of their applications. This presentation teaches you to reassess and strengthen your hiring strategies from job description development through final interviews. Using such proven marketing and customer service strategies such as narrowcasting and client engagement, former recruiter and career coach Donna Shannon will teach you how to retool your recruitment process and keep the very best in your talent pool.

1. How to work collaboratively with hiring managers to identify target candidates through narrowcasting while also widening the net to tap overlooked talent. 
2. How to identify the recruitment procedures that are turning of your best cadidates and apply client engagement tactives to keep them.

Jennifer Fairweather headshot Jennifer Fairweather
Jennifer is currently the Director of Human Resources for Jefferson County, located in Golden Colorado. She is also an Affiliate Professor with Regis University where she facilitates undergraduate and graduate courses for the Anderson College of Business and Economics. Jennifer has over 20 years of experience in both public sector and private sector human resources in addition to operational management experience. Jennifer received a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from CU Denver and a Master of Arts in Human Resources Development from Webster University. She also has her SHRM-SCP, IPMA-SCP and PHR professional certifications as well as a Certificate in Professional Training. Jennifer has facilitated sessions on leadership and development for local and national forums and has written articles for newsletters and newspapers on various management, inclusivity and human resources topics. Jennifer is a Colorado native and enjoys gardening, cooking, traveling and spending time with her family (pets included!)

Richard is the CEO of BLUEFIN, LLC.  BLUEFIN is a facility management consulting and program management firm serving commercial, industrial and institutional building owners and operators throughout the US, Canada and Mexico.  BLUEFIN’s workforce is based in a series of regional offices throughout the US with a headquarters office in Greenwood Village, CO.  The BLUEFIN workforce includes a mixture of engineers, consultants, field service technicians, business development professionals and administrative professionals who work in integrated teams to provide service from both BLUEFIN’s office locations and working onsite at our customers’ facilities.  This has provided both opportunities and challenges for recruiting, professional development and retention among a diverse workforce.

John is responsible for all corporate operations of a fast-paced and growing 130-person environmental engineering consultancy with 15 offices in 8 states. Those responsibilities include human resources, quality assurance/quality control, safety compliance, performance measurement and monitoring, business development, business finance, process efficiency programs, and business administration. His top priority as COO is human resources and continues to be very involved in the hiring of every position within the company and the propagation of long-held corporate values via all managers within the company. Prior to 2010 and being focused on corporate operations, Mr. Peterson’s expertise was centered around geologic and hydrogeologic site characterization of contaminants in soil and groundwater systems and the assessment of fugitive methane gas from coal outcrops, oil and gas infrastructure, and landfills.

 

Session 3:   They Fit or They Quit
Jack Welch is quoted as saying “getting the right people in the right jobs is a lot more important than developing strategy”.  The obvious questions here are: What does “right fit” mean? And how does right fit, repeated over time, bring life to the culture and empower the company’s mission? Traditionally, we hire people based on a handful of conversations, references, and a list of hard skills. This approach predicts job success with only 36% accuracy - for many organizations, this leads to expensive turnover costs and a confused, unfulfilled workforce that derails strategy. For example, many jobs now involve a strategic approach that requires critical thinking and professional knowledge that reaches into cross department functions. So how can we figure out what is a “right fit” for our candidates when they might not even know what the right fit looks like? This session will explore the predictable science behind hiring the right people for the job itself, and how to give your new employees an effective on-boarding that will make them excited to come to work.
