Program Summary:
Diversity statements are a key element of business communications for stakeholders, customers/clients, and employees. However, writing an ethical diversity statement that acknowledges the past, present, and future is not an easy feat. During this presentation, you will feel empowered to write/update a diversity statement that reflects the diversity, equity, and inclusion values your organization holds. You will also learn to express the DEI commitments you hold ethically and authentically.
Attendees will learn:
 •  Tools to write an impactful diversity statement that accurately represents the organization's values, knowledge, and commitment to DEI.
 •  How to understand their ethical responsibility in writing a diversity statement that does not "bait and switch" stakeholders, customers/clients, and employees
About the Speaker:
Emily Perry headshotEmily Perry
is the Growth and Learning Manager at The Gathering Place in Denver. In this position, she uses her strong passion for educating and training professionals on policies, civil rights, and skill sets to best support employee development, wellness, and retention. Her practice is founded in a strengths-based and trauma-informed approach in the creation of curriculum and open discourse with employees. Currently, Emily is developing a robust training program for new and existing staff with an emphasis on trauma-informed care, crisis intervention, mental health and substance misuse crises, low-barrier services, and diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility. She is also on the BAHRA Board of Directors this year, as the Workforce Readiness and Diversity Director.
Previous to her role at The Gathering Place, Emily used her experience as a crisis line responder and domestic violence shelter advocate to address systemic barriers to programs and services that many marginalized communities face. She is committed to advocating for individual civil and human rights and working with organizations to commit to a social justice framework that promotes utilizing the law as a starting point and expanding services beyond those requirements.
Emily worked in disability support and accessibility services for five years and focused on reviewing and updating policies and procedures that disproportionately impact students of color, low-income students, students with disabilities, and students coping with trauma. While at the Colorado Community College System, she provided faculty and staff with educational opportunities to increase their awareness around implicit bias, anti-racism, institutional barriers, and decolonizing and removing white supremacy culture at work.
Emily has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to inclusive engagement of employees, equitable policies, employee and organizational empowerment, self-liberation, legal compliance, and life-long learning. She continues to present to a multitude of organizations and institutions on topics, such as access and equity, ADA and Section 504 compliance, ethics in Human Resources, and trauma-informed care. She is excited to continue sharing her passions with you.
